The Cao Lanh Cable-Stayed Bridge is a component of the Central Mekong Delta Connectivity project, which is also the principal element of the project. The bridge is 2010m long. Completion is scheduled to be in 2017. The estimated maximum price set for this project is 250 million USD.

This is a complex project with strict requirements on its technical standards since it has to comply with both Vietnamese and international standards. Therefore, the project requires a lot of experience in calculation and design. Besides, one of the most intensive tasks in this project is to keep up with very tight schedules requested by main contractor. This mission would not be possible without the use of BIM technology. In this project, we chose Tekla solution to model the whole bridge in a 3D environment. The bridge model will not only be used for Shop drawings production but also will play an important role in the operation and maintenance period of this project.

Special Challenges
After a short period of time getting familiar with Tekla, VTCO decided to apply this technology on Cao Lanh Bridge, which is a large cable-stayed bridge. The team basically lacked experience of working with the software and they faced many difficulties in organizing overall model management, dividing into logical sections for manipulating on Tekla and Tekla BIMSight later on and organizing manpower for each logical component model.
This is a big project with complex structure and dense structure of reinforcement. At one point the team got stuck in an early stage of this project. Since this was the first time for VTCO to use Tekla software on a project, they did not have the system of regulations in the working process. Many times, the selection of options to solve the problem was faced with trouble, resulting in having to change the solution in the end. This led to uncertainty of schedules. In the implementation period of the Cao Lanh Bridge project, they had to spend nearly 40% of their time on studying and adjusting product to be in accordance with client’s requirements (investors required them to arrange drawings using the old ways). The model was in large file size, which caused restrictions during manipulation. To ensure the submission regulations, exporting drawings from the model also was faced with many difficulties, because investors required standards of drawing arrangement very tightly.

Project's Success Factor
Initially, there were some difficulties that the team had to cope with and VTCO’s management Board found this software highly efficient so they tried to apply it and obtained successful results from it. This also was a factor that motivated their engineers to invest more time in researching and developing the works. The Management Board’s effort was shown in giving engineers a hands-on training course in WSP, Finland in April 2014. They gained invaluable knowledge from that training course. Owing thanks to that, they could correct any mistake and applied faster options in designing with high productivity and efficiency. In a short time (nearly 6 months), they became very well acquainted with the model and applied it on this project. After using the model, they helped investors resolve the conflict points of steel in structures very intuitively and accurately. A key point in the success of this project happened when the team realized the importance of studying Tekla’s open API for their work.
